Gmail access appears to be blocked in China

Chinese internet usersEasy access to Google's email service Gmail is now blocked in China, according to reports.
Using Gmail directly via Google's site has been impossible in the country for some time, but locals had still been able to use third-party apps, such as Microsoft Outlook, to use the service.
However, Google's own data indicates such traffic took a nosedive on Friday and has not recovered since.
The US firm said there were no known issues with its provision of Gmail.
"There's nothing technically wrong on our end," Taj Meadows, a spokesman for Google Asia Pacific, told news agency Associated Press.
The digital rights campaign group, GreatFire.org, was one of the first organisations to flag the fact that internet protocol addresses used to let software access Gmail had become inaccessible in China.
"Those protocols are used in the default email app on iPhone, Microsoft Outlook on PC and many more email clients," it said.
"Chinese users now have no way of accessing Gmail behind the GFW [great firewall]."
Google's data suggests there is still, however, a low level of Gmail use in China.
The Chinese government has neither confirmed nor denied that it was behind fresh restrictions.
"The past two years have seen a consistent tightening of all kinds of censorship on the internet and media," said Jeremy Goldkorn, founder of Beijing-based media tracker Danwei.
"There is an increasingly aggressive attitude towards what they [Beijing] call 'internet sovereignty' and they are confident about talking about internet censorship in positive terms."

Taliban declares 'defeat' of Nato

Afghan soldier on patrol in southern Afghanistan - 10 December 2014Taliban fighters in Afghanistan have declared the "defeat" of the US and its allies, a day after the coalition officially ended its combat mission.
A Taliban statement said the US-led force had "rolled up its flag" without having achieved "anything substantial".
Nato formally ended its 13-year mission on Sunday, but about 13,000 troops will stay to train the Afghan army.
Meanwhile, officials said four Afghan soldiers were killed in a Taliban attack in Helmand province on Monday.
Three other soldiers were injured during the attack on an army checkpoint in Sangin district. Eight insurgents were said to have been killed.
The US-led International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) marked the end of its mission by lowering its flag at a ceremony in Kabul on Sunday.
Mission commander Gen John Campbell said the Nato force had "lifted the Afghan people out of the darkness of despair and given them hope for the future".
'Demoralised' But in a statement on Monday, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said the Nato ceremony was "a clear indication of their defeat and disappointment".
He said the Taliban would establish "a pure Islamic system by expelling the remaining invading forces," adding that Western troops were "demoralised".
Nato's Afghan deployment began after the 9/11 attacks against the US.
At its peak, the US-led Isaf deployment involved more than 130,000 personnel from 50 countries.
But from 1 January, the force will consist of about 13,000 mostly-American troops and will shift to a training and support mission for the Afghan army.
The US will also have an additional force of a few thousand troops whose focus will be counter-terrorism operations.
While the US and its allies say the Afghan security forces have been able to prevent a Taliban offensive, violence has increased in recent months.
This year has been the bloodiest in Afghanistan since 2001, with at least 4,600 members of the Afghan security forces having been killed.
Nearly 3,500 foreign troops have been killed since the beginning of the Nato mission in 2001, including about 2,200 American troops.

Croatians vote for new president

A Croatian man rides a bike in front of a poster for the country's presidential electionCroatians are electing a new president, with the poll seen as a test for the main political parties.
The incumbent, Ivo Josipovic, is one of four candidates. He was nominated by the governing coalition.
The other three are Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic, from the main opposition party, right-winger Milan Kujundzic and activist Ivan Vilibor Sincic.
The president has a largely ceremonial role, but has a say in foreign policy and is head of the army.
Croatia is the newest member of the European Union, joining in July last year.
But its economy has struggled, and is now entering its sixth year of recession. Parliamentary elections are expected to be held towards the end of next year.
If none of the four candidates wins more than 50% of the vote, there will be a runoff in two weeks time.

Pakistan's Ajmal to miss World Cup

Saeed Ajmal Off-spinner Saeed Ajmal has withdrawn from Pakistan's World Cup squad as his bowling action is yet to be cleared by the International Cricket Council.
Ajmal, 37, Pakistan's top wicket-taker for the past three years, was suspended from bowling by the ICC in September.
Banned Pakistan all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez is to undergo checks before potentially applying to the ICC for an official test on his bowling action.
Teams have to name their final 15-man World Cup squads by 7 January.
Ajmal, who had been named in Pakistan's preliminary squad, will continue remedial work on his action and play domestic cricket until he has satisfied himself he can take the ICC test.
Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Shaharyar Khan said: "Ajmal withdrew himself.
"We were aware that if he took the official ICC test in a bid to make the World Cup squad and failed it he could be suspended from playing for one to two years and that would mean the end of his career."
Ajmal was Worcestershire's leading wicket-taker last season with 63 wickets to help them win promotion from Division Two of the County Championship.
Meanwhile, Naveed Akram Cheema has been appointed Pakistan's team manager for a second time for their upcoming tours, including the World Cup, in place of Moin Khan, who will remain as the chief selector.
The 2015 cricket World Cup takes place in Australia and New Zealand from 14 February to 29 March.

France Alps: Snow strands motorists in Savoy

Cars stuck near Les Saisies ski resort in Savoy, south-eastern France, 27 DecemberSnow and ice in the French Alps have stranded 15,000 vehicles, snarling up holiday traffic to and from ski resorts, French media report.
The country declared an orange weather alert, its second-highest, as local authorities scrambled to put up motorists for the night.
One man died when his vehicle slid into a ravine in the Isere region.
The government asked drivers to "exercise the utmost caution" and avoid travel if possible.
Three people died in other snow-related incidents across France earlier this week, according to French daily Le Monde.
Snowy conditions in the French Alps are expected to persist into Sunday, followed by freezing weather next week when Paris should see its first frosts in more than a year, French weather forecasters say.
Local gyms and community halls were opened up as shelters in the Savoy region on Saturday.
Motorists seeking accommodation "stormed" the Chambery exhibition centre, according to a live page (in French) on the website of Le Dauphine Libere newspaper.
Cars drive on a snow-covered motorway in Recklinghausen, western Germany, 27 DecemberBritish driver Gavin Rigby told BBC News he had taken 11 hours to drive between Val d'Isere and Bourg Saint Maurice - a journey which would normally take 30 minutes.
Mr Rigby, who is returning to the UK with his family from a skiing holiday, said they had received no help from the French authorities, and had had to rely on other motorists for information.
He felt most sorry for the drivers who had, unlike himself, set out without snow chains.
"The police should have got people to fit chains this morning after half a metre [20 in] of snow fell last night," he said, as he prepared to travel on through the night.
Strong winds caused damage elsewhere in France, shutting the port of Calais, where an anti-migrant fence was partially toppled.
A snowman in Hanau, Germany, 27 DecemberCloser to Paris, the celebrated gardens of Versailles were closed to the public because of gales.
Heavy snow caused disruption to roads in Germany too, causing a 25km (16-mile) traffic jam on the A8 motorway near Stuttgart.
In the UK, the Met Office issued warnings of ice across the country and snow in some areas. Hundreds of homes were without power in parts of England, including nearly 500 in the East Midlands and nearly 300 in Devon.

AirAsia flight to Singapore missing

Anxious family members wait for news at the airport in Surabaya An AirAsia airliner flying from Indonesia to Singapore with 162 people on board has lost contact with air traffic control.
Flight QZ8501, an Airbus plane, went missing at 07:24 (23:24 GMT), Malaysia-based AirAsia tweeted.
Indonesian military planes are searching an area of the Java Sea.
AirAsia, a budget airline, has never lost a plane, but Malaysia's national carrier Malaysia Airlines has suffered two this year - flights MH370 and MH17.
The AirAsia plane disappeared about two hours into a three-hour flight.
It left the Indonesian city of Surabaya in
eastern Java at 05:20 local time (21:20 GMT) and was due to arrive in Singapore at 08:30 (00:30 GMT).
The missing jet had requested a "deviation" from the flight path due to bad weather, the company said.
The flight arrivals board at Changi Airport in Singapore, where the AirAsia flight was dueIndonesia's transport ministry said the pilot had asked permission to climb to 38,000 ft (11,000m) to avoid thick cloud. No distress call is reported to have been issued by the crew.

Emergency contact
There were 155 passengers on board, the company said in a statement:
  • 138 adults, 16 children and one infant
  • Two pilots and five cabin crew were also on board
  • Most on board were Indonesian
  • Six were from other countries: three South Koreans and one French, Malaysian and Singaporean.
AirAsia has set up an emergency line for family or friends of those who may be on board. The number is +622 129 850 801.
An official with the transport ministry, Hadi Mustofa, told local media the plane lost contact over the Java Sea, between the islands of Kalimantan and Java.
The company's chief executive, Tony Fernandes, tweeted: "Thank you for all your thoughts and prayers. We must stay strong."
AirAsia Indonesia is an affiliate of the Malaysian company AirAsia, operating domestic flights round the Indonesian archipelago as well as international services to Malaysia, Singapore, Australia and Thailand.
AirAsia Indonesia was banned from flying to the European Union in 2007 due to safety concerns but this was lifted in July 2010.

Flight MH370 disappeared on a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing in March with 239 passengers and crew. The wreckage, thought to be in southern Indian Ocean, has still not been located.

Indonesian media say more than 160 people were on the Airbus A320-200.
Flight QZ8501 lost contact with air traffic control at 07:24 (23:24 GMT), Malaysia-based Air Asia tweeted.
Malaysia's national carrier Malaysia Airlines has suffered two disasters this year - flights MH370 and MH17 - but Air Asia has never lost a plane.
Flight MH370 disappeared on a flight from Jakarta to Beijing in March with 239 passengers and crew, and MH17 was shot down over Ukraine in July, killing all 298 on board.

He said the plane had asked for an unusual route before it lost contact and that the weather had been cloudy.
Air Asia have given few other details.

Xbox and PlayStation tackle cyber attacks

A PlayStation 4 controllerMicrosoft and Sony have been working to restore internet platforms for their Xbox and PlayStation games consoles.
Attacks disabled the online services on Christmas Day, making it difficult for users to log on.
The Xbox Live status page suggested on Saturday that Microsoft services had been restored. PlayStation said some services were being restored and thanked users for their patience.
A hacking group called Lizard Squad claimed to have caused the
problems.
The name is the same used by a group of hackers that has targeted Sony in the past.
Microsoft's Xbox Live has 48 million subscribers and Sony's PlayStation s
ystem has more than double that number, at about 110 users.
In a tweet posted on Saturday morning, PlayStation said: "Update: PS4, PS3, and Vita network services are gradually coming back online - thanks for your patience."
'Member Two' Sony PlayStation users in Paris, 29 October 2014A hacker claiming to be from Lizard Squad - a 22-year-old calling himself Member Two - said it had hacked the sites "because we can".
He also suggested the motive was to demonstrate weaknesses in the two companies systems.
"It's just such a huge company Microsoft... Do you not think they should be able to prevent such an attack?" he told BBC Radio Five Live.
"Is Christmas really about children playing with their new consoles, or playing with their new toys, or is it about them spending time with their families and celebrating Christmas?" he added. "I think everyone's just taking it all out of the ordinary."

To make the most of the Xbox and PlayStation consoles players have to connect to the internet in order to reach the console manufacturers' servers.
The outage stopped people accessing some core services, such as registering a new account, connecting with other people to play the same game and connecting to entertainment channels via the console.
Earlier this month a different branch of Sony - Sony Pictures Entertainment - was hit by a cyber attack that stole huge amounts of data from its servers.
The fallout from that hack soon focussed on The Interview, a film featuring a fictional plot to assassinate North Korea's leader Kim Jong-un.
No link between Sony Pictures hack and the gaming service disruptions has been confirmed.
However, the latest disruption did mean that many families were unable to enjoy their new Christmas presents.
In the UK, Ros Bruce, from Essex, said her 10-year-old son got an Xbox One for Christmas, had spent most of the day in tears, and called for Xbox to provide compensation.
Ian Hornby, from Lancashire, spent a frustrating time trying to connect a new PlayStation to the Sony network, and said he hoped that the electronics giant would now invest in better protection for its systems.

The content and purposes of blogs varies greatly from links and commentary about other web sites to observations about news or politics, diaries, photos, poetry, essays, project updates, even fiction. Blogs are a fast growing segment of the web. An article in the August 26, 2002 Newsweek estimated the number of blogs at 500,000 with a new one coming online every forty seconds.

Assumptions:

We will make the following assumptions about users who plan to follow these instructions:
  • You have a personal computer with a connection to the Internet.
  • You have a personal email account.
  • You have a moderate amount of experience using the World Wide Web.

It is not necessary to know html to maintain a blog, but it is helpful if you want to customize it.

We will use the free web-based publishing Blogger and the free blog hosting service Blogspot.

Instructions:

4.) You are now at a screen that prompts you to enter a title and brief description of your blog, (See Figure 3). Also it will ask you if you want this to be a public blog. Enter your title, enter your description, choose public or not, click next. A “public blog” will be listed in the Blogger directory and might appear on the recently updated list on the blogger.com home page. If you choose no, your “Private Blog” will still be viewable to anyone on the internet.

5.) You are now given the option of hosting your blog at Blogspot or using Blogger to update a website hosted elsewhere, (See Figure 4). Make sure that “Host it at Blogspot.” Is selected and click next.

6.) Now you will choose an address for your blog and agree to the Blogspot terms of service, (See Figure 5). It would be a good idea to use the same address as the title you chose in step (4.)

NOTE: The address for your blog will follow the form:
http://whateveryouchoose.blogspot.com/
Remember this address. Write it down if necessary.

The address for this set of instructions is http://bloginstructions.blogspot.com/ Enter the address you would like to use in the appropriate blank, click the checkbox next to “I accept the Blogspot terms of service” and click next.

7.) This screen offers you a selection of eight templates for your blog. (See Figure 6). The template determines what your website will look like. Select one of the templates and click “Finished.” Select one of these eight right now, but you can change at any time to one of the many other templates available or even create a custom one of your own.

8.) Now you are at the Blogger interface that you will use to update your blog from now on. On this first visit, the following instructions will appear on the bottom half of the screen. I have copied and pasted them here for future reference.
Quick-Start Instructions
Posting: Enter text and/or HTML in the form field above and hit the post button in the upper right. All posts will show up here.

Saving to your server: To transfer the latest version of your blog to your web site, hit the "publish" button on the right of the black bar, above, or the "post & publish" button in the toolbar at the top. (If there are no changes since your last save, the "publish" button will not appear.)

Editing: All posts that you have permission to edit (which is all posts created by you, or, if you're an administrator of a collaborative blog, all posts) will appear with an [edit] link. To get to older posts that are not showing up in this frame, use the filter form on the right. This filter will not effect what appears on your actual blog page.

How to Create Your First Blog?

Most posts are quite short and are written directly and conversationally, but you can make them as long as you want. Every blog takes on a personality and life of its own.
If you’ve used a Web-based e-mail service like Gmail, Hotmail, or MSN, blog software feels very familiar. Creating the post is simply a matter of filling in the appropriate fields in a form, formatting text, and then sending it off to its destination — in this case, to your blog, rather than a friend’s inbox.
1

Go to the Blogger publishing screen.

If you just finished signing up for your blog, click the Start Posting link to start a blog post; the publishing screen appears. If you’re coming back to Blogger, log in. Blogger takes you to the Dashboard — a kind of control panel showing you the blogs you have set up — giving you access to tools like posting, help resources, or even creating another blog. Click the New Post link on the Dashboard to get to the Publishing screen.
2

Enter a title for your post in the Title field.

Titles are a lot like newspaper headlines: catchy and informative so that they encourage visitors to your blog to continue reading.
3

Write your post in the large field.

Consider writing your blog posts in a standard word-processing program, such as Notepad or Microsoft Word, and saving the document. Many bloggers have spent hours composing right in the entry field of their blog software only to find that their Internet connection has failed or another technical problem has occurred, resulting in a lost post.
4

Format your post.

Blogger’s entry field includes icons across the top that let you change the font and font size, apply bold and italics to text, and create common formatting styles like lists. To use these features, select the text in the field that you want to modify by clicking and dragging over the text; then click the appropriate icon or select an option from the desired drop-down list.

How to make a Website?

Step One
Reserve Your Domain Name (AnySite.com)
Your domain name is like the home of your website. Take your time with this step because the name you choose becomes part of your brand.
Also, try to choose a name that is short enough so you can get matching usernames for Twitter, YouTube and other Social Media accounts. Branding is everything -- don't rush this step!

Step Two
Select Your Web Hosting Company
The web host is the company that houses your site and provides you with space to create web pages, any scripts you can install (forums, shopping carts, blogging, etc.), email addresses, security and so much more.
Hosting companies can overwhelm you with their features, but the majority of them offer the same services. Always start with the cheapest monthly plan because upgrading later is very easy.

Step Three
Start Building!
How you create your site will depend on the kind you want to make. For example, if you want to create a blog, you can take advantage of the built-in templates that come with the blogging (WordPress) platform.
No coding experience is necessary. All you do is search for the theme you want to use, activate it, make your customizations and your website is ready to go.

What Kind of Site Do You Want?

what kind of website
There are so many different types of websites you can create. From ecommerce, membership to content sites, etc. Find out the best way to approach your future site. Click here for details on different kinds of websites you can create.

Static HTML vs. Dynamic Websites

web design imageThere are basically two kinds of websites you can create.
1) Static HTML (Content is uploaded and displayed "as is")
2) Dynamic (WordPress, Joomla, etc.) Dynamic means information is pulled from a database so you can display your website content by date, category, etc. Think blogs.
Static HTML sites are not that popular these days. In order to create them, you have to learn HTML, use templates or buy some kind of software like Dreamweaver, Artisteer, etc.
In 2004, WordPress revolutionized the way we build websites because there is no software to buy. You simply install the WordPress script from your web host, launch the admin panel, choose a theme design and begin writing your content.
Because WordPress is dynamic, you can add functionality very easily using plugins. These are scripts (many of them are free) that you install to help you do so many things (collect visitor feedback, build surveys, add social media icons, and more.)
No longer do you have to spend time uploading complicated scripts just to add shopping carts, comments, and all other kinds of functionality to your website.

Using WordPress to Build Your Site

WordPress is Popular
At first, WordPress was best for blog-like websites where content is arranged by date and category.
Now it's just as easy to use WordPress for traditional websites because you can easily change your main menu to point to appropriate content/pages.
What's cool about this platform is you will have access to a variety of templates you can choose from, so building your website is a breeze.
And when you're ready to change designs, just choose another theme and your site will update instantly!
Here's a quick overview of how to get started with WordPress.

How Long Will Website Success Take?

how long does it take to make money?
This is one of the most common questions I receive about the creation and success of a website and it's also the most difficult to answer.
The time it takes will depend completely on YOU and how long it takes you to learn how to market your site. It will vary from person to person for a variety of different reasons.
If you were running an offline store, you would never expect to know how long before you sell 100 donuts right? The same applies to the online world. There is no way to predict how quickly you will get the traffic you need to succeed with your site.

A CLASSIC Website Mistake

define your audience for your website.
Don't fall into the trap of being so focused on the money that your site fails to connect with real people.
1) Will your site solve problems better than the competition?
2) What kind of person will it cater to?
3) Why would someone come to your site instead of an already-established site on the same topic? In other words, what is your unique angle or spin?
For example, if it's a content site, this is the impression you want to leave...
Build a unique site
In other words, you want to create a unique experience that helps people connect with your content in ways the competition doesn't.
If you want to create a successful site, you have to understand the importance of connecting with human beings instead of just building a site with words on a page.
There are enough wikipedia-like websites on the Net today. Aim to be different, fresh and over deliver your content.
